Some bloggers have become editors in their own right. They attend press previews, market appointments and private events to keep their followers up to date with the latest news. They’re so well-versed in the industry that they can spot a celebrity and tell you who they’re wearing, what season it’s from and where you can buy it. One such blogger is Ashley Spiker. The woman behind ShoeRazzi, a site for footwear enthusiasts, is in-the-know when it comes to all things shoes. Designer shoes, that is.
I recently ran into Spiker at the Soho House where we were both previewing designer Jerome C. Rousseau’s spring ’14 collection during market week. We exchanged business cards and confessions; I told her I was a fan of her blog and oft relied on it for information I might’ve missed during the frenzy of a busy work week.
And so, Spiker opened up to me about the blog’s beginnings, her most covetable footwear desires and more.
Boucas: How did you choose the name ShoeRazzi?
Spiker: I named it ShoeRazzi after shoe paparazzi since the majority of the website is focused on celebrity.
Boucas: What’s an average day like for you?
Spiker: Well, I live in a small city located on the west coast of Florida. On a daily basis you’ll find me blogging away, drinking too many espressos and watching Arrested Development re-runs. When I’m not shoe shopping or soliciting my fiance for a puppy, I’m slowly planning my wedding.
Boucas: How did you get started with your blog?
Spiker: In 2010 I was laid off from a marketing position and my boyfriend (now fiance) who already ran several websites inspired me to start a fashion blog. Soon after, I realized how tough it is to stand out in the general area of fashion. Starting a shoe blog easily complemented my already growing passion for designer shoes. I was also always curious about red carpet footwear and enjoyed writing about celebrity style so it just grew into a fashion blog with a footwear focus.
Boucas: Who’s your favorite footwear designer?
Spiker: It changes every week! At the moment, I’m excited about Christian Louboutin, Brian Atwood, Casadei and Charlotte Olympia’s fall/winter collections. I’m also in love with Sophia Webster, Aquazurra and Gianvito Rossi’s current styles.
Boucas: Any up-and-coming designers you’d place bets on?
Spiker: Watch out for Oscar Tiye and Paul Andrew.
Boucas: If you could describe your style in one word what would it be?
Boucas: Do you have a style icon that you look up to for inspiration?
Spiker: Since I write about celebrities all day every day, my fashion icons are Diane Kruger and Zoe Saldana who both have enviable shoe collections. They’re fashion darlings who share an impressive sense of style on and off the red carpet. I also admire stylists such as Tara Swennen, Ilaria Urbinati, Petra Flannery and Victor Blanco. They dress their clients in festive footwear, which I love.
Boucas: Next to shoes, what are some hobbies you enjoy?
Spiker: Traveling is my second love. My fiance and I were actually “digital nomads” for several years. We were constantly traveling. After a whirlwind two years, we now have a lovely home base. I also enjoy a good workout and happy hour with my girlfriends.
Boucas: Do you have any fun summer plans?
Spiker: We usually spend August in Montreal to escape the unbearable Florida heat, however this year our plans have changed. We’re currently planning on relocating, and I’m vying for New York City or Los Angeles.
